OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) – An open house will be held in Oklahoma City this week, giving Oklahomans interested in construction trade careers the opportunity to gain a paying apprenticeship.

The Electrical Training ALLIANCE of Western Oklahoma will host the 10th Annual Apprenticeship Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at the Alliance’s Apprenticeship Training Center, 1700 SE 15th, in Oklahoma City.

The open house is being held as part of National Apprenticeship Week. It will feature presentations from many of the successful apprenticeship programs with Oklahoma Building and Construction Trades.

The event is free and open to anyone interested in obtaining a construction trade apprenticeship.

“What people are going to come and find out is what kind of apprenticeships are being offered in each one of the trades that will be here. We’ll have some vendors set up as well, promoting some of the tools and stuff that we do use,” said Kristie Shawhan of the Electrical Training Alliance.

Attendees can find out about apprenticeships in a range of trades, including electrician, plumbing, pipefitting and bricklaying. Several employers from across the Oklahoma City metro will be present to speak with potential apprentices.

Individuals interested in apprenticeships do not have to have previous construction trade experience, nor do they have to meet a certain age requirement, Shawhan said.

Apprenticeships have an average starting hourly wage of $19.60 per hour, plus benefits.

Lunch will be provided during the open house.
