Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines announced a new order for nine 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, strengthening the African carrier’s long-haul fleet as international travel demand continues to rebound.

“We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to further expand our existing fleet. This order underscores our continued commitment to enhancing our fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby further strengthening our customer service,” said Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO. “We will continue to acquire more aircraft and adopt the latest technologies as part of our strategic vision to advance sustainable aviation.”

The order, finalized in December 2025, builds on Ethiopian Airlines’ earlier commitment to purchase 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets, bringing its recent Boeing acquisitions to 20 aircraft. The airline plans to use the additional 787-9s to expand its global route network, which already serves 145 international destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.

“The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game-changer for airlines around the world, and we are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in their mission to connect Africa with the global community,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa. “Together, we look forward to shaping the future of air travel with advanced, efficient and comfortable airplanes to serve their passengers.”

Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest fleet of 787 Dreamliners and continues to position itself as a major connector between African markets and global trade and travel hubs. The 787-9 offers improved range, fuel efficiency, and cargo capacity, supporting both passenger growth and high-demand freight routes.

Boeing noted that the Dreamliner family reduces fuel use and emissions by roughly 25% compared to older aircraft, aligning with airline efforts to modernize fleets while improving operational efficiency. Since entering service, the 787 platform has enabled more than 520 new nonstop routes worldwide.

As one of the world’s largest aerospace manufacturers and a major U.S. exporter, Boeing’s commercial aircraft orders continue to carry implications across its domestic manufacturing and supplier network, including facilities and workers tied to its widebody programs.
