‘Oklahoma Decides’ lists speculative Senate candidates

OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) — The Oklahoma Decides election‑information site has published a preliminary list of names being discussed as future candidates to represent Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate.

President Donald Trump has nominated Sen. Markwayne Mullin to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security. If confirmed, Oklahoma would invoke its vacancy process created under SB 959, which authorizes the governor to appoint a temporary U.S. Senator. State law requires an appointee to sign an oath agreeing not to seek the seat in the next election, though lawmakers note the oath is not legally binding if an appointee later chooses to file.

There is understandably a lot of chatter nationally about Oklahoma’s process to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy. In 2021 @senatorpaxton and I passed SB959 to fix a gap in our statutes where Oklahoma was one of very few states that had no provisions for our Governor to fill a temporary…

Alongside confirmed Democratic contenders already filed for the regular election cycle, the site’s “Heard on the Street” section highlights several Republicans being talked about informally as possible future Senate candidates, including Rep. Stephanie Bice, Rep. Kevin Hern, Gov. Kevin Stitt, Attorney General Gentner Drummond, Rep. Josh Brecheen and State Sen. Dusty Deevers.

These names reflect early political chatter about who may seek the seat after an appointed interim senator serves, pending Mullin’s confirmation.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify context related to Sen. Mullin’s nomination for Secretary of Homeland Security.
