OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) — Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby announced he will retire after nearly four decades leading one of Oklahoma’s most influential tribal nations.

Anoatubby said he will resign as governor effective at noon on June 26, 2026. Under the Chickasaw Nation Constitution, Lt. Gov. Chris Anoatubby will immediately become governor for the remainder of the unexpired term.

“It has been a blessing and my great honor to serve the citizens of the Chickasaw Nation as Governor,” Anoatubby wrote in a public statement. “After much prayer, thought and discussion with my family, I have decided it is time to retire and entrust leadership to a new generation of dedicated and capable leaders.”

Anoatubby described the decision as bittersweet and said he has full confidence in the Chickasaw Nation’s elected, appointed, and employed leaders to continue the momentum built during his tenure.

“The strength of the Chickasaw Nation lives and breathes within every Chickasaw,” Anoatubby wrote. “Chikasha poya — we are Chickasaw, and united, we will continue to thrive.”

The announcement drew praise from The State Chamber of Oklahoma, which recognized Anoatubby’s long record of leadership, economic development, and service to the Chickasaw people.

“Governor Bill Anoatubby’s leadership has been nothing short of transformational,” said Chad Warmington, president and CEO of The State Chamber of Oklahoma. “During nearly four decades as Governor of the Chickasaw Nation, the Chickasaw people have experienced tremendous economic growth, expanded opportunity, and an extraordinary strengthening of Chickasaw culture, heritage, and identity.”

Warmington said the Chickasaw Nation has been a valued member of The State Chamber for more than 20 years and said Anoatubby was personally engaged in the Chamber’s work from the beginning.

“His leadership helped build bridges across Oklahoma’s business community, and his example has shown what visionary, steady, and values-driven leadership can accomplish,” Warmington said.

Warmington also pointed to the Chickasaw people’s long-standing identity, “Unconquered and Unconquerable,” saying Anoatubby’s leadership helped carry that spirit forward.

“Under Governor Anoatubby’s leadership, it has been lived out through the strength, resilience, and success of the Chickasaw people,” Warmington said. “We thank Governor Anoatubby for his many years of service to The State Chamber, to the state of Oklahoma and, most importantly, to the people of the Chickasaw Nation. Job well done, Governor, and best wishes in retirement.”
