OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) — Gov. Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 985 into law, creating the Oklahoma Local Food for Schools Program.

The measure, authored by Sen. Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, establishes a framework to connect Oklahoma schools with locally produced agricultural products. The goal is to help schools incorporate fresher Oklahoma-grown foods into student meals while supporting farmers, ranchers and food producers.

“By creating stronger partnerships between our schools and local farmers, we’re improving access to fresh, nutritious food while investing in Oklahoma agriculture and local communities,” Thompson said.

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry will administer the program and coordinate efforts between schools and local producers. According to the Senate, the initiative is designed to strengthen Oklahoma’s food supply chain, expand farm-to-school opportunities and encourage healthier meal options for students.

Thompson said the program also creates new market opportunities for producers across the state.

“This law helps create new market opportunities for local producers while giving students greater access to fresh foods grown and raised right here at home,” Thompson said.
