Oklahomans get paper check tax refund option

OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) – The Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Office is giving Oklahomans a new option for how they receive their state tax refund.

A new agreement between the Treasurer’s Office and the Oklahoma Tax Commission gives taxpayers the option of receiving their refunds in the form of a paper check.

Treasurer’s Office officials said the new option gives Oklahomans greater flexibility and control over their money.

“We’re committed to championing the people of Oklahoma, and this change reflects our dedication to putting power back in their hands,” said State Treasurer Todd Russ. “By expanding Oklahoma tax refund options, we’re giving people easier access to their hard-earned money and ensuring that their preferences are respected.”

Taxpayers’ previous refund options were either ACH direct deposit or a state-issued debit card. The ACH direct deposit option remains.

The debit card option was a useful alternative but did not meet the preferences and needs of many Oklahomans, State Treasurer’s Office officials said.

The Treasurer’s Office and Tax Commission saw the shortcoming of the debit option and came up with the check option. Creating the new option makes the process more convenient and empowers taxpayers to choose the refund payment form that works best for them.

The ACH direct deposit method is the fastest and most efficient method for receiving a tax refund, but the check payment is a tangible option that eliminates limitations sometimes associated with debit cards, Treasurer’s Office officials said.

“Every step we take is about improving financial experiences for Oklahomans, and this is a clear example of government working for the people,” Russ said. “We’re proud to celebrate this new option with the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the positive impact it will have on taxpayers across the state.”

The new check option is available on page 51 of the full tax form.
