OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) – State leaders are speaking out on the new head of Oklahoma State Department of Education. Governor Kevin Stitt has appointed Lindel Fields as Oklahoma’s new State Superintendent of Public Instruction, drawing praise from business leaders and lawmakers for the veteran educator’s decades of service and leadership.

Fields replaces Ryan Walters who resigned from the elected post last week. Fields brings more than 30 years of experience in career and technical education, having retired in 2021 as superintendent and CEO of Tri County Tech in Bartlesville. During his tenure, the school gained national recognition for its innovation and excellence in workforce training.

Senate President Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, applauded the appointment, calling Fields a “proven leader” in education and workforce development.

“Lindel Fields has dedicated his life to education, workforce development, and ensuring Oklahomans have the skills they need to succeed,” Paxton said in a statement Thursday. “His proven record of leadership and innovation in CareerTech will bring valuable experience and vision to the role of State Superintendent.”

Paxton emphasized the Senate’s support for Fields as he transitions into the position, highlighting the critical role education plays in shaping the state’s future.

“The Senate stands ready to work with the new state superintendent to get him up to speed quickly, while supporting him as he takes on this important responsibility,” Paxton said. “Education is the foundation of our state’s future, and I look forward to assisting him in any way I can to strengthen opportunities for Oklahoma students.”

“Oklahoma’s students, teachers, and families deserve an education system where student success—not politics—remains the central focus. Leadership disputes and political conflicts distract from the real work of improving classroom outcomes, supporting educators, and preparing students for the future,” said Chad Warmington, president and CEO of The State Chamber of Oklahoma. “Governor Stitt’s appointment of Lindel Fields brings welcome experience and proven leadership to this effort. With over three decades of service in Oklahoma’s CareerTech system, Mr. Fields has a strong record of building innovative programs, improving student achievement, and creating cultures that put learners first. His appointment is a step toward ensuring that the state’s education leadership is centered on results, stability, and a vision for long-term success.

Warmington went on to say in a statement, “As conversations continue about how best to structure the role of superintendent, the priority must remain ensuring accountability, consistency, and a clear focus on strengthening learning opportunities across our state. Our children’s futures are too important to be sidelined by politics. Every effort to refocus on student achievement should be taken seriously, and Mr. Fields’ appointment reflects that commitment.”

Fields succeeds in a role central to overseeing Oklahoma’s K-12 public education system, including curriculum standards, school funding, and teacher certification.ahoma’s K-12 public education system, including curriculum standards, school funding, and teacher certification.
