Air India Orders 30 Additional Boeing 737 MAX Jets

OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) — Air India has placed an order for 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, continuing a major fleet expansion as passenger demand grows across India and South Asia. The purchase includes 20 737-8 jets and 10 larger 737-10 aircraft and brings Air India’s Boeing order book to nearly 200 airplanes across single-aisle and widebody models.

The airline exercised existing purchase options to support network growth and fleet modernization. Air India plans to deploy the 737-8 on high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional routes, while the 737-10 will allow the carrier to carry more passengers with lower per-seat operating costs while maintaining fleet commonality.

“This additional order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft is part of our broader fleet strategy to position Air India firmly for the future, as a world-class global carrier that India deserves and the world expects,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO and managing director of Air India. “This order supports steady deliveries and fleet upgrades planned over the next few years.”

Boeing projects the Indian and South Asian aviation market will require nearly 3,300 new airplanes over the next two decades, with roughly 90% of those expected to be single-aisle aircraft such as the 737 MAX.
