OKLAHOMA CITY (OBV) — Sen. Carri Hicks has received the Oklahoma Education Association’s Outstanding Legislator Award for her advocacy on behalf of public education.

Hicks, D-Oklahoma City, is a second-generation public school teacher, reading interventionist and member of the Senate Education Committee. She holds a master’s degree in early childhood education and has authored and supported legislation focused on literacy, teacher pay and benefits, the teacher shortage and support for Oklahoma classrooms.

“I will always use my voice and my votes on behalf of Oklahoma’s public schools, students, professional educators and staff,” Hicks said. “The vast majority of Oklahoma children continue to attend public schools, including my own three kids.”

Hicks said her experience working with teachers and support staff has shaped her work at the Capitol.

“I’ve worked shoulder to shoulder with our amazing teachers and support staff, and I know firsthand how dedicated they are to helping our children reach their potential so they can succeed in school and throughout life,” Hicks said.

Hicks received the award from OEA President Cari Elledge.

“Our investments in education are an investment in the lives of Oklahoma children, and in the future of our state,” Hicks said. “That’s something we should all be fighting for.”
