SHAWNEE, Okla. (OBV) – Oklahomans who aspire to become a maintenance technician can apply for an apprenticeship that can lead to a professional career in the maintenance industry.

Georg Fischer Central Plastics is partnering with the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance and the U.S. Department of Labor to offer a Registered Apprenticeship Program for aspiring maintenance technicians.

Individuals interested in becoming an apprentice have until the end of April to apply.

The apprenticeship will provide job training developed by industry professionals and approved by the Labor Department or a state apprenticeship agency. It provides mutual benefits, enabling employees to build their future workforce while apprentices receive paid work experience that leads to a nationally-recognized credential and high-paying career, according to a Georg Fischer news release.

“This two-year partnership is intended to be the beginning of a meaningful, long-term career for those selected to participate and allow them to earn a great income to support themselves and their families for years to come,” said Central Plastics President Bryan Lucas.

Georg Fischer Central Plastics is the City of Shawnee’s second largest employer. It offers a comprehensive range of HDPE piping systems in North America and supports a multitude of applications in the gas, water and energy sectors.

Maintenance apprenticeship training topics will include electrical, welding, PLC, pneumatic, preventative maintenance, inspection, quality, robotics and machining

Apprenticeship candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Current Central Plastics employees may apply if they have been with the company for at least six months with a positive work record. All other applicants must have a stable and verifiable employment history. Preference will be given to candidates with proven technical skills.
