Salt Lake City, UT (OBV) — In a move aimed at promoting equity and diversity in the technology sector, Western Governors University (WGU) has announced a new $300,000 scholarship program designed to support Native American and Indigenous women pursuing degrees in technology.

The scholarship, part of WGU’s broader mission to expand access to affordable, high-quality education, will be available to students enrolled in the university’s bachelor’s programs in fields such as software engineering, data analytics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and IT management.

“Technology is transforming every aspect of our lives,” Javier Gonzalez, a WGU spokesperson said. “It’s vital that Native American and Indigenous women and nonbinary individuals have the support and opportunity to lead in that transformation.”

As a nonprofit, online university, WGU is known for its competency-based learning model, which allows students to progress through coursework at their own pace. This approach has helped remove barriers for students with limited access to traditional education due to factors like geography, economic hardship, or time constraints.

The new scholarship initiative reflects WGU’s ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive tech workforce by investing in communities that have historically been underrepresented in both higher education and STEM fields.

“This scholarship is more than financial support—it’s a tangible investment in lives, families, and communities,” the spokesperson added.

Students interested in applying can find more information at WGU’s scholarship page.
